“We Didn’t Realise We Were Making Memories; We Just Knew We Were Having Fun!”

2 min read

At btfp we’re all about celebrating those key life events. But what is equally wonderful about life is those memorable moments and the joy that comes out of the little things; the everyday experiences where later on in life we look back and say, ‘we didn’t realise we were making memories, we just knew we were having fun.’ Those moments that make up the story of our lives.

This time of year, the summer holidays is the best time! If you’re of a certain age you would have grown up in a time where everybody knew everybody; you knew who your neighbours were and you stopped to pass the time of day. You borrowed a cup of sugar and they would borrow your telephone because not everybody had one. Parents were strict and all grown-ups would tell you off if you were naughty.

You played out until it was dark, got dirty, played Knock-down-Ginger, one man all man, hide & seek and British bulldog. Exploring meant venturing out to play on the nearby field/open space or wasteland. Boys played soldiers and had epic battles defending their territory whilst girls played two balls up the wall, hopscotch, hand clapping games and skipping. The sound of the ice cream van was the pied piper for kids and they delivered up 99s, multi-coloured lollies and screwballs for our delectation.

Back then, we had proper seasons where summers were hot and to keep cool we had ice-poles from the freezer and played water fights using washing up liquid bottles. You holidayed at the seaside and spent the whole day at the park on apparatus that these days wouldn’t pass health & safety regulations! We had fun and if we were bored we made our own fun. Every now and then, when it’s warm, the sun is shining and the scent of summer wafts through the air, it takes me back to those glorious summers. Happy Days!
